Porridge and Poached Chicken @ Low Yau Kee, Jalan Tun HS Lee, Kuala Lumpur

I have fond memories about this 40 year old stall as we used to eat Hokkien Mee right across this stall. Sadly the Hokkien Mee stall is no longer there but this place still remains. It's still as popular as ever so come early to eat their porridge as food finishes quite early.

It's run by an old couple with the old man being in charge. He's the one who gets to chop the poached chicken while the wife will pour the sauce and oil over it. Right next to their stall, you will see three tall metal pots being kept warm over individual gas stoves. Every once in a while, their helper will stir the porridge to make sure it does not get stuck. Find your seat around the shop's frontage or around the pavement. Everything is prepared ahead - the raw fish slices in a pile, poached chicken to be chopped as and when an order is placed, fried intestines (they keep them in a plastic bag in one of the drawers of the stall) and etc. Rumour has it, this old man has made lots of money from his stall that every night, a Mercedes will come and pick him up after the stall is closed.

You get three types of porridge here - chicken shreds, raw fish and mixed pig's innards. The porridge here is the ultra smooth type from boiling it for a total of 7 hours and is slightly sweet. I decided to sample the mixed pig's innards porridge (chee chap chuk) which came topped with crunchy fried intestines, pork balls and a mix of the innards. Really yummy stuff which I totally enjoyed.

Also good is their poached chicken that is smooth. Once the chicken is chopped by the owner, they pour a soy sauce with a tinge of oil to give it extra flavour. This stall is extremely popular with the office workers around here after work. Quite a few people pack back their porridge to eat it at home since it can get quite dusty around this area with the buses stopping in front of the stall. I even spied two men in a Brabus tuned Mercedes who came to pack back the porridge in a huge metal pot for their boss.

Low Yau Kee
82, Jalan Tun HS Lee
Kuala Lumpur

(Non Halal. Closed on Monday and Tuesday. Open from 5pm onwards. Come early as food tends to finish quite fast. Usually they close by 9pm or earlier. Prices are very reasonable - porridge is about RM3 and a plate of small chicken is RM4.)

lemongrass - yes, parking is quite problematic here hence must plan properly when u eat here. For the few times I ate here, I was lucky to get parking next to the stall.

ktx - better go on wed as they're still closed. Love their food here.

wmw - I saw one guy ordered just a plate of crunchy intestines on top of his fish porridge so I guess he is crazy abt them just like u.

joe - ah the beef noodles guy who adds so much MSG.

sc - time for another round this week?

babe - think the buses has been there for ages. I remember how my dad used to say it was "ka liu" for the Hokkien Mee with the smoke hence it tasted yummier.

precious pea - good pt but then problem is buses are super crowded around the evening.

I love rice porridge with chicken. It is the ultimate "comfort food", and it reminds me of what my mom would make for me when I was sick and stayed home from school.

Buses still stop right in front? Still as convenient as ever huh!
By the way, there used to have a stall selling S'pore Prawn Mee nearby. Is it still there & is it good?

Can i know how the Chinese make the porridge/congee?
I am a Malay who love to devour Chinese food (as long as it is Halal :-)) and i love to make/cook simple Chinese food at home (mostly stir fry). But i still didn't manage to make a nice Chinese Porridge. Do i need to have a rice cooker that have a Porridge Function? :)
Your information is highly appreciated...

But the porridge for really good.

effizzul - I'm not an expert in cooking porridge. Do search Babe in the City's blog as I remember she has a recipe for porridge. Usually we cook it in a pot and not the rice cooker.

zara's mama - hiya to the family including the new addition. They're quite ok now, guess they heard the complaints.

This porridge stall is certainly very famous because there was once me and boyfriend went there at 6pm Saturday and the place hardly has any empty table.
Their chicken meat was smooth and not too oily, just good enough to go together with the porridge.
The stall owner was having brisk business everyday.
I have been a fan of your blog for quite sometime and I enjoyed the frank oppinion you have. I notice most of the eateries you blog about is in KL. How about some blog about food in Puchong?
